1997-2009: Mediastrategy Consulting and Training

With the easy access to Email communication, Dan was instrumental is starting two email lists (or Listservs) called Brigada-Strategy-TV-Film and another called Brigada-Media-Research. Dan provided information updates on using media and several hundred joined. Here are some comments from members:

  • … the information gleaned and the contacts developed have had, and I trust will continue to have, a positive effect on our overall project development and production strategy. We have enjoyed a heightened and broadened awareness of ministry possibilities. (England)
  • Made me aware of what productions and other media ideas are going on. Provided opportunity for discussion of trends, equipment, needs in media and Christian media outreach. (Europe)
  • Overall, I find this conference an encouragement as much as anything. It’s great knowing about other efforts and initiatives around the world committed to media oriented Kingdom work.” (Kenya)
  • ...I like the variety of topics and ideas exchanged. I like your updates, and the discussions of philosophy and research. (USA targeting Central Asia)

In 1997 Dan published a series of research articles called the MEDIA EFFECTS ABSTRACT Series. Here are some comments:

  • I think it is very helpful, particularly as there seems to be so very little on-the-ground research on the impact of media on particular populations. (Middle East)
  • …. YES !!l!!!!!l!!llll!!l!!l!!!!ll!I””
  • This looks interesting for one who teaches communication and media in Norway.
  • Having friends in a M country  I would be very interested in the journal article about Media and Adolescence in a Moroccan Town. (USA)
  • Thanks for the great abstracts. They are very thought-provoking and challenging. It helps me to put the issue of Christian media into a cultural and more scientific mode. (USA)
  • … this is great stuff. Looking forward to more!
  • This information and illustrations will be very useful to me. (Philippines)

In April 1997, Chris went out to California to attend her Mom's (Inga) and Aunt's (Ingrid) 70th birthday party. They were identical twins.

1997 While in the graduate program at Regent University, Dan was asked to conduct three Video Production workshops for CBN Asia. Each was three weeks long…

1997 Manila, Philippines July for CBN Asia 25 students

While are this workshop Dan met Gerald Davis who was a IMB media worker who was then based in Manila. Gerald took me around and we talked about what they were doing in the Philippines. These great projects included some of the most popular radio soap operas and some very impactful dramatic films. One evening he took me to a friends house where they were having a Louisiana shrimp boil. With the men, it seemed like the meal was a competition who could eat more shrimp and have the largest pile of “peelings.” I want you to know it was a first time experience! One of the things I was able to do is get the media organizations together for a meal and time of fellowship on the last day.

In 1999, Dan met Gerald on the street in Chiang Mai, Thailand which led to a mediastrategy consultant role in SE Asia. It was through Gerald that Dan met Mickey Sampson and became involved in Cambodia.

1997 Kunming, China October – Dan & Chris went to Lake Lugu, China to film a documentary about a matrilineal ethnic group that Landstown Community Church in Virginia Beach, VA was interested in. We went through Hong Kong and met Dr Ling Tai Leung of Breakthrough Media, a Regent Alum.

We went into China from Hong Kong by train with a suitcase of illegal Bibles from the Bibleways Guest House and ended up in a Chinese hotel on the mainland where no-one spoke English and we always wondered what exactly was in those dumplings! From there we flew to Kunming to start the trek to Lake Lugu. Take a look at the link for the documentary below.

Faculty of Communication

1997 Jakarta, Indonesia November for CBN Asia 15 students

  • This was a very interesting workshop. One of the requirements of the local sponsor was to provide housing for the trainers. They put me in a church guest house which was nice except people got up at 4am to wash the clothing – right outside my door! Carol Conkey of Create International was in Jakarta and came and co-taught. We were also asked to lecture at Pelita Harapan University to their media students.

1998 Chennai, India January 19 – Feb 12 for CBN Asia and Jesus Calls ministry

My hosts were a local radio and tv production ministry called Jesus Calls. We spent three weeks training to do story re-enactments.They hosted me in a very nice hotel and on the weekend I went to a beach hotel. Pretty nice place. No English, no drinking water. The only foreigner!

Karunya University

On the way to Chennai, Dan stopped in Bombay (now Mumbai) Jan 19th to meet with the editor of a new Christian Media magazine, THE GALILEAN and then on the 22nd he flew to Bangalore (where we lived in 1984) to meet Rajkumar Doss about an infomercial project and Dr George Ninan of the CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION SKILLS(CCS) regarding a possible partnership between CCS and Regent University. Dan also flew to the KARUNYA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCES in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu to speak at their chapel (2000 students) about mediastrategy.

1998 Chiang Mai, Thailand March 19 – April 12 for CBN Asia but held at the Christian Communication Institute (CCI) 16 students.

Tokay Gecko

Through this workshop we met Joan and Alan Eubanks who founded CCI. I stayed at a traditional Thai house on the Eubanks property and each night I would hear a big lizard called a Tokay Gecko make that call “Tokay” and I would hear what sounded like someone hitting the said of the wooden house! Alan was quite a comedian and told me that the lizard was about afoot long and their prey was small field mice. The noise was them hitting the live mouse on the side of the wood house to kill it! Here is some info of the Christian Communications Institute (CCI):

CCI uses Likay, a traditional Thai dance

It was founded by Allan and Joan Eubank with the support of the Thai Christian Foundation in 1980 to communicate the gospel through Thai Culture and is today a part of Payap University. CCI intends to use every art form possible, both modern and traditional, to communicate the gospel in ways easily understood by the Thai people and to provide models for positive social and family life. The CCI helps lead students, in schools all over Thailand, to Christ each year, as well as performing evangelistic Thai folk dramas in about 25 villages. They also continue to perform internationally and have started outreach into Thai prisons and government schools. CCI had to curtail performances due to COVID and sent this message out to students in Thailand. It will give you an idea of the music and dance of the CCI Likay Dance.

In April 29, 1998, Chris' father, Thomas Klyver passed away and the Henrich Family flew to California from Virginia Beach to attend.

1998 West Africa – These next three workshops were all 5 days long. The sponsor, CBN Worldreach flew Dan into Ghana, then Benin via Amsterdam just a few days ahead of time, Dan wrote: I would arrive in country Sunday evening and start teaching Monday – Friday, take Saturday and Sunday to get to the next location, etc. I flew to Accra, Ghana on May 13th for several days to meet with Cinema Challange Mobile Cinema Van ministry to discuss the followup of our film SABINA’S ENCOUNTER. I then flew to Benin for the first workshop (below).

1998 Porto-Novo, Benin May 18-22 with Benin government employees 10 students

  • This workshop was held at the Benin TV station with mostly government TV staff plus a few locals who wanted to start a TV station. We covered all the basics of TV production. Benin is bordered by Nigeria, Togo and Burkina Faso and has an estimated population of 13 million with an estimated 45% Christian, 28% Muslim, 11% Voodoo and 12% listed as no religion.

1998 Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso May 25-29 with a private TV station 10 students

CTV Staff

My host was CVK TV – Canal Viim Koega that is owned by a church group. Let me just say that Ouagadougou is very dry. It is the host of the prestigious Pan African Film Festival (FESPACO) which started in 1969. I was given a room at the former host hotel for FESPACO which was pretty run down by 1998. In the evenings, I had hoped to swim, but no one was in the water because the bats swooped down to get a drink from the pool before doing whatever bats do at night in Burkina Faso! One afternoon my host took me to an art shop where paintings were done on glass from the back(!) He wanted to send me home with something and I really liked the picture of the family on the motorbike. It was so African. So I choose a 5×8 size and my host delivered a 12×16″to my hotel just before he was taking me to the airport! So imagine my thoughts as I wondered how to get this safely home to the USA when I only had one soft side suitcase!

1998 Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire June 1-4th – at the AoG radio station 18 students

During this timeframe in Côte d’Ivoire private FM radio station licenses were available and the Assemblies of God church was one of the first to actually get a license and wanted to be trained announcing and production skills. Fortunately, they had a music recording studio and the staff there had basic recording skills and audio editing.

June 14-26, 1998 - Chris traveled to California to attend a graduate course sponsored by the National Institute of Learning Disabilities (NILD) and train her to be a Level One NILD certified therapist. During this same time, Dan was asked to apply to teach at Liberty University in Virginia and Chris wrote out the application. Dan had been recommended by Dr Charles Pollak as Liberty had offered him the position but he was committed. So they reached out and Chris called Dan in Benin and Chris wrote out the application and sent it in. When he returned from West Africa he drove out to Lynchburg and was interviewed and offered a position that same day which he accepted!

1999 Chiang Mai, Thailand June/July – A three-week workshop was held as part of the Asian Institute of Christian Communications (AICC) with 12 video students.

Right after Christmas we brought Abraham Kasiki, a dubbing expert from Kenya to Cambodia and we both installed a state-of-the-art language dubbing studio that had been designed and procured by Handclasp board member, Paul Verhagen.

  • Remember Y2K? Everything was supposed to go off power, computers would die and so much more, the end of the world, etc. Well, the studio ran off a generator. We went to a Khmer party on the 31st and watched around the world as the new year was “rung in” without a problem! On the 31st we were taken to a party where the single women and single men danced separately but together – a sort of matchmaking dance. There was a wall of speakers 30 feet long and 12 feet high about 40 feet from where we sat. One could feel compression on your chest from the sound waves!
